EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern announced the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week from the week of Nov. 18. Brett Basanez (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) of the football team took home the male honor and Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) of the volleyball team took home the female honor.
Basanez concluded his rookie season with a 368-yard passing day against Illinois-the sixth-best passing yardage figure in NU history. Basanez completed 31-of-49 passes, threw for a touchdown and ran for another. Despite playing his final three games with a broken leg, and missing another two due to the injury, he finished as the Big Ten leader in total offense (230.0 ypg). Basanez also led all freshmen quarterbacks nationally in passing yardage per game (220.4 ypg).
Lange posted a pair of 20-kill matches last week in helping the Northwestern volleyball team earn its first 10-win Big Ten season since 1988. Lange recorded 21 kills and hit .381 as the Wildcats nearly knocked off No. 14 Wisconsin in Madison on Wednesday. She then posted another 21 kills to go along with seven blocks and a .529 hitting percentage, as NU defeated No. 17 Penn State in its home finale Saturday night.
