EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University has named its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 29-Oct. 6. This week's men's recipient is golfer Tom Johnson, while the women's representative is volleyball's Erika Lange.
Junior Tom Johnson (Weaverville, Calif./Del Campo) captured the Windon Memorial Classic individual crown-his first collegiate tournament title-by shooting a tournament-record final-round 66 on his way to a three-round tournament-record total of 206.
The previous single-round record of 67 was held by a trio of players, the most recent being former NU All-America Luke Donald in 1999. The former lowest winning individual score of 208 was previously held by Anthony Rodriguez of Texas A&M.
To go along with setting tournament records, Johnson's 66 and three-round total 206 are both career lows. Johnson finished first among 66 golfers.
Junior Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) helped the NU women's volleyball team to its first 3-0 Big Ten start since 1988 with a dominating performance against Iowa on Friday night.
In the three-game sweep, Lange recorded a match-high 20 kills while posting a .607 hitting percentage. Her effort helped lead the Wildcats to a .398 team hitting percentage, the sixth-best single-game effort since 1985. Lange also added four total blocks to her Big Ten-leading total.
Against No. 6 Minnesota on Sunday, Lange tied for the match high by posting 10 kills.
