EVANSTON, Ill. -
It was a clean sweep for swimming and diving, as Northwestern named its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for athletic competition from the week of Oct. 23. Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) was the male recipient and Carmen Cosgrove (Perth, Australia) was the female recipient.
Swanson opened the 2002-03 season Friday by posting a pair of first-place finishes in Northwestern's dual meet victories over UW-Milwaukee and Toledo. Swanson took home the title in the 100 freestyle in a time of 46.29. He followed that effort up with a victory in the 200 breaststroke in 2:08.64. Swanson then competed on three winning and two runner-up relays on Sunday as the Wildcats defeated four other teams to capture the NU Relays title.
Cosgrove enjoyed a productive start to the 2002-03 season, finishing first in two events in a three-team dual meet Friday with UW-Milwaukee and Toledo. She finished first in the 200 butterfly by three seconds (2:04.70), in addition to winning the 200 freestyle (1:55.51). Cosgrove then added to her stellar weekend on Sunday at the NU Relays. She was a member of five winning relay teams as the Wildcats won all 11 events to finish first out of five teams.
