EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University has named its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 14-20. Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) of the golf team is this week's men's recipient, while Rachel Evjen (Eau Claire, Wis./North) is this week's women's recipient.
Johnson continued his strong play, finishing in a second-place tie at California's Alister Mackenzie Invitational last week. Now ranked third nationally, Johnson shot 8-under for the tournament. He carded a career-best 65 (6-under) in the second round.
Johnson now has finished third, first and second in the Wildcats' first three tournaments this fall. His play has helped lead NU to a No. 13 national ranking.
Evjen set the tone as the Wildcat women's cross country team surprised several ranked teams to finish 13th out of 37 squads at the Pre-National White Race in Terre Haute, Ind. Running the 6-kilometer course that will host the NCAA Championships in November, Evjen ran 21:16.5, the third-best time in NU history, for 32nd place overall.
Evjen holds the top two times in school history, running them at the 2000 (21:13) and 2001 (21:15.0) NCAA Midwest Regional Championships.
