KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Led by sophomore Ina Kim's first-round 76, and rounds of 77 by Elizabeth Burden and Lauren Grzebien, the Northwestern women's golf team is sixth out of 15 teams after the first day of the Mercedes-Benz.
The tournament, now in its sixth year, is being hosted by the University of Tennessee. Play will continue tomorrow and continue through Sunday.
The Swedish Junior Nationals actually hold the team lead after one round. The Swedes shot a collective +12 and hold a three-stroke lead over Auburn. Northwestern, meanwhile, carded a team total of +20 and sit two strokes behind fifth-place Nevada-Las Vegas. Michigan State and Purdue, a pair of Big Ten teams, are tied for third at +16.
Kim's four-over-par round put her four shots off the pace being set by leader Ashley Prange of North Carolina. She holds a one-shot lead over three women.
Mary Ellen Grzebien is also nipping at her teammate's heels. She carded a 78 and is tied for 27th. Erin Breslin shot 81 and is tied for 43rd.
