Olympic Torch Relay Comes to Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Olympic Torch Relay will pass through Evanston this Saturday, Jan. 5, making a stop outside Northwestern's Ryan Field. The torch is expected to be at the southwest corner of Ashland Avenue and Central Street at approximately 7:30 a.m

The Chicago-area leg of the relay will begin in the city at 6:30 a.m., moving north into Evanston along Chicago Avenue and Sheridan Road. The entourage will turn west on Central Street toward Ryan Field, where they will take a 15-minute break before heading toward Wilmette on Ashland Avenue.

More than 165 torchbearers have been selected to carry the torch while the relay passes through the Chicago area. Each bearer holds the torch for one-fifth of a mile.

The relay began Nov. 19, when the flame was lit in Athens, Greece, and will conclude Feb. 8 when it arrives in Salt Lake City for the 2002 Winter Olympics.
