Women's Basketball Falls to Michigan State, 75-58

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Northwestern's women's basketball team fell to Michigan State by a score of 75-58 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich., Sunday afternoon. The loss drops NU to 4-16 overall, 0-9 in the Big Ten.

Northwestern was led by freshman guard Samantha McComb (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) who finished with a team- and season-high 15 points. She was 5-for-10 from the floor including 3-for-5 from behind the arc. McComb's previous high was an 11-point effort against Denver back on Dec. 5.

Junior forward Natalie Will (Nappanee, Ind./Northwood) had a career-high six steals.

Both teams struggled early as the referee called the first media timeout at 15:54, the score was 0-0. MSU's Kristin Haynie scored the first bucket of the game with 15:37 remaining.

Down 30-22 at halftime, NU's leading 3-point threat, freshman Melissa Culver (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) came out and nailed her only 3-point basket of the night, cutting the lead to five (30-25). The Spartans answered with a 10-4 run to take a 40-29 lead. But, NU wouldn't give up as they came right back with an 11-4 run of their own, highlighted by a spectacular reverse layup by Culver on a fast break.

The teams traded baskets before MSU went on the decisive 12-3 run that all but sealed the win.

The Spartans (13-7, 3-6) were led by Syreeta Bromfield who finished with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting (2-3 from behind the arc).

NU is back in action this Thursday when the host the Nittany Lions at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Tip time is set for 7 p.m.
