EVANSTON, Ill. - The following are quotes following Saturday night's 63-50 Northwestern victory over Iowa in men's basketball.
Iowa Head Coach Steve Alford
On his team's performance...
"I thought [Northwestern] played harder, they played with more of a purpose tonight, they deserved the win."
On the state of the team...
"I've seen this coming. I've tried giving people the benefit of the doubt. I've got to play the guys that are really busting their tails every practice, and the guys that will listen to me."
On the team's free throw shooting...
"I think we have a few guys on this team that think shooting free throws in a game is not that important."
On the team's mindset...
"These kids understand what it's like to play in this league. I shouldn't have to be getting out books and getting out sayings and getting out all these things to motivate and excite them. If you can't get motivated in this league, playing at this level, and having the oppurtunity to play at this level, there is something wrong."

On his team's performance...
"The defense was good early on, and that set the tone for things."
On taking the early lead...
"The first three league games we got behind early and were scratching, trying to claw back the rest of the games. Tonight it seemed like it was 6-1 for a long time, which is not a big lead, but we weren't behind."
On Aaron Jennings...
"Tonight, three or four times I saw two big hands go up there. He got rebounds that other guys on our team can't get. He was just above the whole crowd. I was real happy for him."
On last week's game at Iowa...
"The starts were so different, it's hard to know. Out there we were never a threat to them, but tonight our defense was very good."
On the ability to win...
"If you beat a good team like Iowa from start to finish then you know it's been in there all along. Maybe it's just coming earlier this year than it did a year ago."
