EVANSTON, Ill. - Freshman Sarah Kwasinski (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) set a Northwestern women's basketball single-game record with seven blocked shots, but the 'Cats fell to Illinois 87-73 Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Kwasinski rejected four shots in the first half, and broke the record with 7:38 to play when she stopped Illinois' Iveta Marcauskaite in the lane. Former Wildcat great Anuche Brown previously owned the mark with a pair of six-block games in the 1984-85 season.
Northwestern (4-14, 0-7 Big Ten) struggled against Illinois' full-court press, committing 23 turnovers in the loss. Illinois (12-4, 5-2 Big Ten) scored 30 points off Wildcat miscues.
Three 'Cats reached double figures in scoring. Kwasinski paced NU with 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Junior Leslie Dolland (Bloomington, Minn./The Blake School) netted 14 points, while classmate Nicole Daniels (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) notched a season-high 10 points. The Wildcats' 73 points marked a season high.
Forward Natalie Will (Nappanee, Ind./Northwood) was brilliant offensively, dishing a career-high ten assists with just one turnover in 28 minutes. Will also scored seven points before fouling out.
Six Illinois players reached double-digits in scoring, led by Marcauskaite, who had 26.
Northwestern faces back-to-back road games this coming week. The 'Cats will take on Penn State on Thursday at 6 p.m., before traveling to Michigan State for a 1 p.m. tilt on Sunday.
