Grapplers Go 3-0 at Wendy Duals

Ashland, Ohio - With six Wildcats undefeated, the Northwestern wrestling squad swept the competition by a combined score of 105-16 Sunday at the Wendy Duals in Ashland, Ohio. The 'Cats have won four straight heading into next week's Big Ten opener at Purdue. The three wins up NU's overall record to 7-4.
The 'Cats first match of the day was against Gardner-Webb, out of North Carolina. NU wrestlers allowed just 24 total match points to be scored by the Bulldogs. Jason Erwinski (Tinley Park, Ill./Mt. Carmel) pinned his opponent in 46 seconds while Tommy Vargas (Highland Calif./Pacific.) and John Giacche (Flemington, N.J./Blair Academy) earned tech falls en route to a 46-0 victory.
In Round Two, NU defeated Tennessee-Chattanooga, 31-7. Ryan Cumbee (Frankfort, Ill./Providence) pinned his man in 2:46, while Vargas posted a, 15-2, major decision.
In Round Three, NU squared off against host Ashland, beating the Eagles 28-9. This time it was Ryan Kane (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) who ended his match early, winning by tech fall, 20-5.
Vargas at 133, Giacche at 141, Cumbee at 149, Erwinski at 174, Andrew Curran (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel) at 184 and Brendan Curran (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel) at 197 all went 3-0 in their respective weight classes. Kane's two victories gives him a team-high 20 wins on the year. The sophomore is 20-8 overall and 9-2 in dual competition.
The 'Cats are next in action when they travel to West Lafayette to take on Purdue Friday night at 7 p.m. They then face Northern Illinois, in DeKalb, Sunday at 2 p.m.
