EVANSTON, Ill. -
To the Northwestern community:
As was undoubtedly the case for all of you, I watched yesterday's tragic events in horror and disbelief. The attacks in New York City and Washington and the crash of another airplane in Pennsylvania are difficult to comprehend and their aftermath will affect us for a very long time.
Our deepest condolences go to the families and friends of all of the victims of yesterday's tragedies. While we do not yet know the extent of our loss, I expect that there will be members of the Northwestern family - alumni, parents and others -- who are among the victims. Their loss will affect us all.
Here on our campuses, there will be several events to memorialize the victim's of yesterday's tragedy. Information will be available on the "Breaking News" link on the University's homepage on those events. Additional information on the University's response to events also will be updated regularly on Breaking News.
Updated information on New Student Week is available by calling a new special hotline at 847-467- 8910 or on the Web at http://www.wildcats.northwestern.edu/nsw. We anticipate that many of our new students may need to take additional time in arriving, so we are making the necessary arrangements to provide them assistance once they do arrive.
We are working with the Big Ten and the U.S. Naval Academy to decide whether Saturday's scheduled football game against Navy will be played. We have already canceled the travel plans for some of our other athletic teams.
In addition, I want to remind you that the University's Counseling and Psychological Service is available to students, faculty and staff. The CAPS may be reached at 491-2151 during normal business hours and at 491-8100 after hours. The counselors will assist in helping individuals and groups who are grieving or in shock.
I also think it is important that no groups or individuals within the Northwestern community be targeted in response to these horrible events. As a diverse institution, Northwestern has many different groups with differing viewpoints. I am confident that the respect and tolerance that is a hallmark of the Northwestern experience will continue, even in the wake of this tragedy.
Events such as this rock the foundations of our community, as well as those of buildings. But through our continued mutual support, I know that Northwestern and our country will remain strong.
