EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern athletic department announced the 2001-02 women's basketball schedule and it features 14 home games for the `Cats. With 27 games on the regular season schedule, NU will play more than 50 percent of its games at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

"This schedule will test us early," said head coach June Olkowski. "We're a young team and our nonconference schedule could set the tone for the season. But having a tough early season schedule will prepare us for the rigors of the Big Ten."

Under the direction of Olkowski, the NU women's basketball team returns four starters and seven letterwinners from last season. NU opens the regular season Nov. 18 by hosting Northern Illinois at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The `Cats start the Big Ten portion of the schedule on Dec. 22 against Iowa in Evanston.

The `Cats take an early season trip to Miami, Fla., where they play three games and compete in the Florida International Shootout in late November. After a game at Miami (Fla.) on Nov. 21, NU laces `em up for Game 1 of the tournament against host Florida International the day after Thanksgiving. The `Cats step right back on the hardwood the following day against Monmouth.

NU will once again host the Roger L. White Invitational on Nov. 30 - Dec. 1, featuring Hofstra, La Salle and the University of Houston. The tournament tips off when NU faces Hofstra on Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. The tournament concludes Dec. 1 with the championship game at 8 p.m.

NU also hosts two exhibition games at Welsh-Ryan Arena, taking on the Chicago Challengers on Tuesday, Nov. 6 (7 p.m.) and RTU Clondaika (Latvia) one week later on Nov. 13 (7 p.m.).
