EVANSTON, Ill. - Six Northwestern University athletes have been named 2001 Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholars. The selections are made each year by Black Issues in Higher Education magazine.
The Wildcat men and women who were honored by the magazine this year were softball player Stacey Austin, fencers Erin Chan, Pin Chen and Monica Rani, wrestler Will Marcantell, and baseball pitcher Gabe Ribas.
Black Issues in Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Award in 1992 to honor undergraduate students of color who exemplify the standards set by tennis great Arthur Ashe Jr.
In order to be an Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2, and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
