EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University has named its Athletes of the Week for May 7. The selections were made based on competition from April 31-May 6.
MALE -- Men's Golf Team
The men's golf team rolled to a 13-stroke victory at the Big Ten Championships this weekend in Urbana, Ill. This is the `Cats third straight Big Ten title and the seventh in the history of the program. Luke Donald (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England/Royal Grammar School) won medalist honors for the second consecutive year and was named Big Ten Golfer of the Year. Tom Johnson (Fair Oaks, Calif./De Campo) was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and was named to the All-Big Ten team alongside Donald and Chris Thayer (Richmond, Va./Godwin). Head Coach Pat Goss was named Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his five-year tenure at NU.
FEMALE -- Sharon Drysdale, Softball Head Coach
Head coach Sharon Drysdale finished her final season at the Wildcat helm Sunday with a 2-1 spoiler over Iowa. The Hawkeyes, who needed the final win to become Big Ten champions and host the Big Ten tournament, faced a Wildcat team ready to send their coach out with a win. The `Cats handed Iowa their second home loss of the season, the only Big Ten team to beat Iowa at home...and they did it on Drysdale's birthday. Earlier in the week, Drysdale was honored in her last home game with various gifts, but the biggest was the renaming of Northwestern's Anderson Field to Sharon J. Drysdale Field. Drysdale finishes her Northwestern coaching career 640-512-3 and her overall coaching career 704-529-3.
