Baseball Falls to Penn State, 14-6

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Northwestern baseball team opened a four-game series with Penn State at Beaver Field in State College Pa., losing 14-6. Junior Zach Schara (Madison, Wis./West) started the game on the mound for NU, falling to 6-5. Schara went three and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits and striking out two. It was Schara's shortest outing of the year.
Senior J.J. Standring (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) came in with the bases loaded in the third inning and got Penn State first baseman Donnie Wright to ground out, ending the rally. In the fourth, junior Andy Adams (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) came in with one out, and ended up throwing three and one-third innings. Adams gave up five runs on seven hits. Freshman Cody Conway (Maysville, Ky./Saint Patrick) came in the bottom of the eighth to record the final out.
Offensively for the 'Cats, center fielder Steve Haake went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Catcher Joe Hietpas (Appleton, Wis./North) went 2-for-4, stroking his ninth double of the season and the 54th of his career. First baseman Jason Krynski (Niles, Ill./Niles West), third baseman Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) and pinch hitter/second baseman Todd Morgan (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) each had an RBI in the game. Eric Roeder (Onsted, Mich./Onsted) also had a single, adding to his team leading 56th hit.
NU falls to 20-28 on the year and 8-13 in the Big Ten. The Wildcats are back in action tomorrow against the Nittany Lions with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
