STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Colleen Cheng's season came to an end today at the Lincoln Tennis Center, as the nation's 60th-ranked singles player fell to USC's Jewel Peterson, 7-5, 6-1, in the Second Round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championships. Cheng finishes the season with an 31-14 overall record.
In the third match between these two this year -- and the second in less than a week -- Cheng and Peterson battled it out in the first set, but Cheng could not pull out the win, falling 7-5. The second set was all Peterson, as she stormed to a 6-1 win to advance to the third round of competition.
Earlier in the season, Cheng defeated Peterson, 6-4, 6-4 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The two met again last Thursday in the NCAA Tournament's Round of 16, where Peterson won in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) to lead USC to a 5-1 victory over the Wildcats.
