Baseball Loses Series Finale at Minnesota, 4-3

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - The Northwestern baseball team lost the series finale to Minnesota, 4-3, at Siebert Field in Minneapolis. With the loss, the Wildcats were swept by the Gophers and eliminated from contention for a spot in the six-team Big Ten Baseball Tournament. The team entered the day needing a win and a Michigan loss to qualify.
Things were looking good early for the 'Cats. In the top of the first, centerfielder Steve Haake and second baseman Eric Roeder reached base and came around to score when first baseman Travis Tharp's clouted his third home run of the year. Tharp crushed a Josh Krogman offering over the rightfield wall, upping his RBI total to 20.
But the Gophers answered with two runs in the third and one more in the fourth to tie the score at 3-3. Both runs in the third were unearned, as Minnesota managed just one hit in the inning. In the fourth, leadoff hitter Luke Appert scored on a bases-loaded walk by Wildcat starting pitcher Ryan Bos.
Minnesota then scored one run in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
Bos threw eight innings, giving up four runs (one earned) in his first complete game of the season.
Offensively, Todd Morgan went 2-for-4 to up his average to .340. Roeder, Haake, Wesley Robinson and Dan Pohlman each had one hit in the game.
