EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University senior catcher Joe Hietpas (Appleton, Wis./North) was named to the 2001 Verizon University Division District 5 Academic All-America Baseball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The team was announced today after being voted on by selected members of CoSIDA.
All members of the District 5 team now move on for consideration on the national team. Last year, Hietpas was a member of CoSIDA's Academic All-America Baseball Second Team for the second straight year.
The District 5 University Division includes all NCAA Division 1 institutions located in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as Canadian provinces Ontario and Manitoba.
Hietpas has started 50 of 52 games this season, with a .277 batting average. He is currently second on Northwestern's all-time RBI list with 157, and needs four more to become the school's all-time leader. Earlier this season, he became the Wildcats' career leader in doubles taking over the top spot with 56. Hietpas also holds top-10 positions all-time in total bases (2nd/373), home runs (3rd/27), hits (5th/228), at-bats (5th/689), hit by pitch (t-5th/22) and sacrifice flies (t-6th/10).
NU is currently 24-28 (11-13 Big Ten) and sitting in fifth place in the conference standings. The Wildcats travel to Minneapolis to take on the University of Minnesota in the season's final Big Ten weekend looking for a second straight berth into the six-team Big Ten Baseball Tournament. The first game of the series is set for Friday at 6:35 pm at the Gophers' Siebert Field.
