Women's Tennis Advances to Big Ten Title Match

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's tennis team kept its Big Ten Championship three-peat dream alive Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 semifinal-round defeat of host Ohio State at the Stickney Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Wildcats improve to 21-4 on the season.
The Wildcats will meet intrastate rival Illinois in the championship match at noon (EST) on Sunday. NU defeated the Illini, 4-3, earlier this season.
Northwestern and Ohio State split the first two doubles matches, as OSU's Kristy Dascoli and Monica Rincon defeated Colleen Cheng and Marine Piriou, 8-1, at No. 1. Jessica Rush and Lia Jackson topped Sadhaf Pervez and Laura Maloney, 8-1, at No. 2. Then the duo of Shannon Duffy and Simona Petrutiu defeated Erica Fisk and Claudia Castro, 8-5, at No. 3 to win the doubles point for the 'Cats.
In singles, the Wildcats won three matches in straight sets for the victory.Duffy clinched the win for NU by beating Pervez, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3. Piriou topped Fisk at No. 4 (6-2, 6-2), while Rush was victorious at No. 6 over Castro (6-1, 6-2). The three matches that were abandoned all were in the third set.
