Women's Tennis Advances to Big Ten Semifinals

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's tennis team came a step closer to winning its third straight Big Ten title Friday, defeating the Purdue Boilermakers, 4-1, in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Championships. The Big Ten Championships are being held at the Stickney Tennis Center on the campus of The Ohio State University.
The Wildcats improved to 20-4 overall, while the Boilermakers fell to 8-16.
In doubles, Northwestern won at the top spots to take the early advantage. Colleen Cheng and Marine Piriou defeated Purdue's Melissa Woods and Missy Wright, 8-5, at No. 1. Jessica Rush and Lia Jackson defeated Lynsey Fick and Melissa Iqbal, 8-2, at No. 2.
In singles, the Wildcats won at Nos. 2, 4, and 6 to clinch the victory. Jackson defeated Iqbal in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) at No. 2, while Piriou posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Woods at No. 4. At No. 6, Rush extended her Big Ten match win streak to 11 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Fick. Purdue's Gretchen Haynor topped Shannon Duffy at No. 3 (6-3, 6-0) for the Boilermakers' only point of the match.
The Wildcats will meet the winner of the Ohio State/Iowa match Saturday at noon.
