Women's Tennis Defeats Ohio State, 5-2

EVANSTON, Ill. - In a meeting of the Big Ten's top two teams, the 11th-ranked Northwestern women's tennis team ended the 2001 regular season with a 5-2 win over Ohio State Sunday afternoon at the Johnson Tennis Center. With the win, the Wildcats finished the conference season with an untarnished record of 10-0 and moved to 19-4 overall. OSU fell to 16-9 on the season and 7-3 in the conference.
Ohio State took the first point of the day after winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. OSU kept the momentum briefly in singles, as No. 33 Kristy Dascoli defeated No. 40 Colleen Cheng (6-4, 6-0) at No. 1 for a 2-0 Buckeye lead.
But junior transfer Simona Petrutiu gave NU its first point of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Erica Fisk at No. 4. Northwestern then turned up the tension, as No. 55 Lia Jackson defeated Monica Rincon (6-4, 6-1) at No. 2 to tie the match at 2-2. Jessica Rush gave the Wildcats the lead with a drubbing of Lindsay Williams (6-2, 6-1) at No. 6. Marine Piriou sealed the win for the 'Cats in straight sets at No. 3., defeating Sadhaf Pervez (6-3, 6-3). Senior Shannon Duffy capped off her final regular-season match as a Wildcat with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5.
The Wildcats will be the No. 1 seed in next weekend's Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The 'Cats will play the winner of the match between the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds on Friday, April 27. The tournament is scheduled for Thursday through Sunday at the Stickney Tennis Center.
