Women's Tennis Closes Out 2001 Regular Season This Weekend

EVANSTON, Ill. - The 10th-ranked women's tennis team (17-4, 8-0 Big Ten) will close out the 2001 regular season this weekend at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. Northwestern will host Penn State (13-6, 5-3 Big Ten) Saturday at 10 a.m., and No. 33 Ohio State (16-7, 7-1 Big Ten) Sunday at 11 a.m. The Wildcats lead the conference at 8-0, while the Buckeyes are tied for second place with a 7-1 record.
Scouting Penn State: The Lions are 5-3 in Big Ten play and 13-6 overall. Last week PSU fell to Purdue (4-3), but rallied Sunday afternoon to beat Indiana (4-3). The Lions are led by senior Pilar Montgomery and junior Rebecca Ho. Both are 7-1 in Big Ten matches, playing at No. 1 and 2, respectively.
Scouting Ohio State: The Buckeyes were handed their first Big Ten loss of the season, falling to Indiana 5-2 last Friday. The Buckeyes then defeated Purdue, 5-2. Senior Kristy Dascoli leads the team with 24 overall wins this season, bringing her career total to 98. With two more victories, she will become the first female tennis player in OSU history to reach the 100-win mark. Teammate Sadhaf Pervez remains undefeated in Conference play, owning an 8-0 record at No.3 singles.
Northwestern Notes
* Colleen Cheng (No. 1), Marine Piriou (No. 3) and Jessica Rush (No. 5) are all undefeated in conference play.
* The Wildcats have recorded 10 sweeps this season.
* Marine Piriou and Simona Petrutiu have split time playing at the No. 4 spot and together hold a 21-0 record.
* Colleen Cheng and Lia Jackson are ranked 40th and 55th, respectively in the latest WingspanBank.com collegiate poll. The two have been ranked among the nation's top 75 all season.
