EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern baseball team fell to Wisconsin-Parkside, 5-3, Tuesday afternoon in the Wildcats' home opener at Rocky Miller Park. NU outhit the Rangers, 6-5, but four Wildcat errors allowed four unearned runs to cross the plate for Parkside, proving too much to overcome.
Junior lefthander Ryan Bos (Barrington, Ill./Lake Zurich) threw 6.1 innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits and striking out two. Freshman Dan Konecny (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) came on in relief and tossed the final 2.2 innings, not allowing a run. Konecny struck out one and walked one.
Offensively, NU scored single runs in the second, seventh and eighth innings. Senior Wesley Robinson (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephen's) got things going in the second with a leadoff single to right. With one out, freshman Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) grounded out to first, advancing Robinson to second. Catcher Joe Hietpas (Appleton, Wis./North) stepped to the plate and belted a Matt Sattersten offering to left for a single, scoring Robinson from second. Parkside led 2-1 after two innings.
In the seventh, Pohlman hit a two-out double to left and Hietpas followed by reaching on a shortstop error, allowing Pohlman to score. Pohlman's run made the score 5-2, Rangers.
The `Cats tacked on another run in the eighth with a two-out David Gresky (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) double to left and an error on Parkside's first baseman. The error allowed Gresky to score after Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) was hit by a pitch, putting Gresky in scoring position. NU had a chance to close the gap on UWP by putting runners on first and third, but a groundout to first killed the rally.
In all NU managed six hits, with doubles by Gresky (7) and Pohlman (2) highlighting the day. Hietpas picked up his 12th RBI of the season, while Todd Morgan ran his hit streak to four games.
