EVANSTON, Ill. - Junior Zach Schara, a first team All-Big Ten pick as a pitcher last year, showed the stuff that gave him those honors Friday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman, Okla. As a result, the Wildcats gained a 4-0 win over Oklahoma in the first of a three-game set.
Northwestern improved to 7-5, while the Sooners fell to 5-9.
Schara went the distance in the nine-inning game, scattering just four hits. He struck out six and walked two as he improved his record to 2-1.
Northwestern got everything they would need in the first inning, scoring two unearned runs. A Sooner error led to RBI singles by Wesley Robinson and Todd Morgan. The Wildcats scored single runs in the fourth and eighth innings to provide insurance.
Offensively, Robinson slapped three hits to lead the way. Joe Hietpas (1-for-3) had a run and an RBI, while Travis Tharp collected an RBI off the bench.
These teams will resume the series Saturday at 2 p.m., and close it out Sunday at noon.
