EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern baseball team was shutout by Ohio State, 5-0, Monday evening in a nonconference matchup between Big Ten foes. The Buckeyes put together nine hits to score five runs at Ed Smith Complex in Sarasota, Fla.
OSU jumped out to the early 1-0 lead when Nick Swisher hit his sixth home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Buckeyes scored two more in the sixth and two more in the seventh as the pitching duo of Kevin Goodrum and Brandon Steen kept the NU bats in check. Goodrum improved his record to 2-0, pitching seven shutout innings, striking out seven, before giving way to Steen.
Northwestern pitcher Zach Schara (Madison, Wis./West) took the loss, throwing his second complete game of the season, giving up three earned runs (five total) in eight innings. He lowered his ERA to 2.92 and the loss evened his record at 2-2. Schara now leads the team in strikeouts with 32.
Offensively, three Wildcats combined for all six hits. Second baseman Eric Roeder, (Onstead, Mich./Onstead) shortstop Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) and designated hitter Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) each went 2-for-3 to lead NU at the plate. Roeder hit his second double of 2001 in the first inning, but was left stranded as NU left nine baserunners on the pads. The Buckeyes left six runners on base.
