Northwestern Names Athletes of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern has named its Athletes of the Week for March 12. The selections were based on athletic competition from March 5-11.

MALE - BEN JOHNSON, BASKETBALL
Sophomore guard Ben Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle) had a stellar performance against Iowa in the first round of th?e Big Ten Tournament. He scored a season-high 24 points, including 21 in the second half when the Wildcats cut a 19-point deficit down to three (50-47), before ultimately taking a 72-55 loss. Johnson went 9-of-13 from the field and hit 6-of-9 three-point baskets to earn game-high honors in the scoring column.

FEMALE - COLLEEN CHENG, TENNIS
Colleen Cheng (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) has become Northwestern's all-time career wins leader with 110 career singles victories. Cheng surpassed Marjorie Gantman's record of 103, set from 1993 to 1997. Over the weekend, Cheng won both of her matches at No. 1 singles in straight sets. Cheng is currently ranked 39th in the nation and has compiled a 23-9 overall record. She is 5-0 in the Big Ten.
