Northwestern Names Athletes of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern has chosen its Athletes of the Week for February 26. The selections were made based on athletic competition from February 19-25.
MALE -- Ton Swanson, Swimming
Freshman Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) had a stellar performance at the Big Ten Championships over the weekend in Minneapolis, Minn. Swanson qualified for the finals in each of his three individual events and swam on four of the five relays. His third-place performance in the 200 individual medley finished him third overall with a new school record of 1:47.87. He set another school record in the 400 individual medley (3:51.48) in his first time swimming the event, finishing eighth. Swanson's 200 backstroke time of 1:44.94 was good for fourth overall. He also led off three record-setting relays, the 200 and 400 freestyle relays and the 400 medley relay.
FEMALE -- Carly Wells, Fencing
Carly Wells (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) placed second at the Midwest Conference Championships this past weekend in the sabre division. Wells defeated two fencers from Notre Dame and her own teamate, Kate Frambach (Elm Gorve, Wis./Catholic Memorial), en route to the final. Wells was also part of the gold-winning sabre squad which helped NU take home a third consecutive Midwest Conference team title.
