Women's Basketball Falls to Ohio State, 61-41

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern University women's basketball team gave OSU a battle for the first half Wednesday night in Columbus, but fell to the Buckeyes, 61-41.
The Wildcats are now 4-21 on the season and 0-15 in the Big Ten. OSU improves to 16-9, 6-9 in the Big Ten.
The first half was an evenly-played affair with five ties and four lead changes. Ohio State opened it up a little, taking a 10-point lead on a pair of free throws by Mandy Stanhope at 9:25, marking the biggest lead of the half. Northwestern went on a 9-2 run to get within two (25-23) with 3:56 remaining. The Wildcats tied it at 27 on an Emily Butler jumper, but OSU split a pair of free throws to take the one-point advantage with two minutes left. An OSU fast break lay-up gave the Buckeyes the 30-27 lead to end the half.
OSU opened the second half with a full-court press that Northwestern struggled with. The Buckeyes collected 17 steals forced the Wildcats into a season-high 35 turnovers for the game. NU would get as close as nine (40-31) with 12:44 left in the game, before Ohio State went on an 11-0 run (50-31). The Buckeyes controlled the rest of the game for the win.
Tami Sears (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) led the Wildcats' offense with 12 points. Leslie Dolland (Bloomington, Minn./The Blake School) added seven points and five rebounds.
Lauren Shenk led the Buckeyes with 15 points and D'wan Shackleford added 12.
The Wildcats will close out the 2000-01 regular season Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Northwestern hosts the Indiana Hoosiers at 2 p.m.
