Women's Tennis Knocks Off No. 9 USC, 5-2

EVANSTON, Ill. - Playing at the nation's elite tournament, the 20th-ranked Northwestern women's tennis team scored its second upset of the weekend with a 5-2 win over ninth-ranked USC. The Wildcats defeated the Trojans Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinal playoffs of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships held in Madison, Wis.
Northwestern opened the match taking two of the three doubles matches for the early lead. Shannon Duffy and Marine Piriou battled to the wire to defeat USC's Melissa Esmero and Anita Loyola, 9-8(5). Lia Jackson and Simona Petrutiu defeated Bernadette Bayani and Maureen Diaz, 8-5.
The Wildcats won four of the six singles matches in straight sets to take the 5-2 win. NU's two losses came at the No. 3 and No. 6 spots.
The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday, February 24 at Michigan State to open the Big Ten season. Match time is set for 11 a.m. (CDT).
