Baseball Team Defeats Kansas, 5-4, in Phoenix

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern baseball team evened its record to 1-1 at the Rawlings/Oakland Athletics Spring Training Tournament, defeating the University of Kansas 3-2. The Wildcats improved their overall record to 3-2, scoring five runs on 11 hits.
Senior Michael Nall earned his first victory of the young season, throwing six innings and giving up four hits and three runs (one earned), and striking out six.
Sophomore Christopher Spiering came on in relief and threw an inning and two-thirds, giving up one run on two hits. Junior Andy Adams finished the game with a perfect inning and a third to earn his first save.
Offensively Northwestern opened up the attack with 11 hits compared to Kansas' six. Sophomore Eric Roeder continues to swing the hot bat, as he drove in two runs on 2-of-5 hitting from the plate. Sophomore Brandon Ackley and junior Matt Thompson had two hits apiece, with Thompson driving in one run. Freshman David Gresky and sophomore Ken Padgett each had one RBI.
Northwestern is next in action tomorrow, facing St. Mary's (Calif.) at 11 a.m.
