Women's Tennis Sweeps UCLA, 7-0

EVANSTON, Ill. - The 20th-ranked Northwestern women's tennis team swept eighth-ranked UCLA, 7-0, at the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships Thursday in Madison, Wis. The Wildcats dominated the Bruins behind strong play from Colleen Cheng and Lia Jackson at the top two spots.
After winning her doubles match with partner Jessica Rush 9-7, Cheng fell behind early to Catherine Hawley, losing the first set 3-6. She then stormed back in the final sets, 6-1 and 6-2, to win the match. Lia Jackson went to a first-set tiebreaker with Petya Marinova before winning that and going on to a 6-4 victory in the second to finish out the match.
Shannon Duffy, Marine Piriou, Simona Petrutiu and Jessica Rush each won in two sets, completing the singles sweep, with Petrutiu cruising through at 6-0, 6-0. She had earlier partnered Lia Jackson to an 8-4 victory in the No. 3 doubles slot.
Northwestern improves to 5-1 on the season. In Friday's second round, the Wildcats face No. 12 Vanderbilt, who beat Washington 4-0. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m. central time.
