Northwestern Tops Denver in Women's Basketball, 66-58

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's women's basketball team earned its second victory in six days Wednesday, defeating 2001 NCAA Tournament participant Denver 66-58 at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Freshman Suzanne Morrison (Franklin, Mich./Detroit Country Day) scored 15 of her career-high 19 points in the second half, sparking the 'Cats (2-6) to the come-from-behind victory.
Trailing 42-32 with 14 minutes to play, the 'Cats went on a 13-2 run, capped by freshman Samantha McComb's (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) third three-pointer of the evening. From there, Morrison took over, scoring NU's next seven points. She finished 7-of-8 from the floor, and added nine rebounds. The 'Cats made 10 of their last 11 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Center Sarah Kwasinski (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds for her third career double-double. She also blocked five shots. Another freshman, Melissa Culver (Littleton, Colo./Heritage), did not make a field goal but still finished with nine points on 9-of-12 free-throw shooting. Culver also led the team with five assists.
The 'Cats jumped out to an early 19-9 lead, but the Pioneers (2-4) rallied with an 11-2 run during the last 3:41 of the first half to take a 30-27 advantage into the locker room.
As a team, NU notched its highest-scoring half of the season, with 39 points in the second stanza. The 'Cats also shot 77 percent (20-of-26) from the charity stripe.
