The wrestling season got underway this weekend as the Wildcats traveled to Michigan State for the annual open tournament. There were no team scores kept, but a few grapplers came away with winning records.

Junior John Giacche (Flemington, N.J./Blair Academy) wrestled his way to a 5-0 mark and an open title at the 141 pound weight class. He registered a fall against his MSU opponent in the quarterfinals and a tech fall in the opening round. In the title match, Giacche edged out a MSU opponent, 6-5, for the win.

Paul Augle (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) lost in the second round of the tournament in the 133-lb class, but wrestled back through five matches to take fourth. Brendan Curran (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel) won his first three matches before falling to Central Michigan, 8-4, in the fourth round. He wrestled his way back through the consolation bracket to place fifth overall. Ryan Kane (Frankfort, Ill./Providence) also took fifth after making it to the semifinals without losing.

The Wildcats are next in action on Friday when they travel to River Falls, Wis. to take part in the Northern open. This again is an open tournament and team scores will not be kept.
