EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's basketball team will have its final tune-up Tuesday night, taking on RTU Klondaika at 7 p.m. in Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The RTU roster features 14 players, ranging from 16 to 30 years old. This is their final game in a 10-game tour that started Nov. 1 at Ball State. RTU has already faced Ball State, Eastern Illinois, Purdue, Marquette, DePaul, Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Michigan State. They take on Western Michigan tonight at 7 p.m. in Kalamazoo. The Latvians have posted a 1-7 record, with their only win coming against Eastern Michigan, 83-73.
"After talking to other coaches, the RTU team has gotten better throughout their schedule," said head coach June Olkowski. "The way Anete Jekabsone shoots from outside, they'll test us on the perimeter, and they have 6-6 center (Zane Teilane) who can dominate the paint. She'll test our post players."
NU won its first exhibition game, defeating the Chicago Challengers, 79-57, last Tuesday in Welsh-Ryan Arena. Junior guard Emily Butler (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) led the way with 19 points and a game-high seven assists. Freshman Suzanne Morrison (Franklin, Mich./Detroit Country Day) chipped in 13 points, while classmate Melissa Culver (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) scored 12. Culver also had six assists. In all, the 2001 freshman class poured in 32 of NU's 79 points against the Challengers.
The Wildcats begin the regular season this Sunday when the host Northern Illinois at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Tipoff is 2 p.m.
