CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Northwestern women's cross country team finished seventh out of 23 teams at the NCAA Midwest Regional Saturday morning in Carbondale, Ill. The Wildcats scored 203 points and saw junior Rachel Evjen (Eau Claire, Wis./North) earn All-District honors for the second straight year with a seventh-place finish.
Northwestern did not secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, which go to the top two finishers in the region, and the Wildcats are unlikely to receive one of the 13 at-large bids distributed among the nine regionals contested today.
Evjen clocked 21:15.0 over the 6-kilometer course, a season-best effort. She led the way for Northwestern, as she has done in every race she's run the last two years.
Freshman Diana Hossfeld (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) also earned All-District honors, scoring 20 points for Northwestern with a time of 21:51.5, while junior Karen Rogers (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) scored 40 points with a time of 22:21.1. Nicole Kuznia (Olivia, Minn./BOLD) and Sara Jurek (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall) were NU's other scorers-Kuznia scored 64 points with a time of 22:55.5, while Jurek scored 72 points with a time of 23:07.7.
Nora Colligan (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) was 101st in 23:38.4 and Nicole Kalogeropoulos (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) was 134th in 24:28.8 to round out Northwestern's contingent.
Oklahoma State, ranked 20th in the latest national poll, won the regional team title with 56 points to finish ahead of second-place Minnesota (97 points). OSU and the Gophers earned the region's automatic bids for the NCAA Championships, which will take place Monday, Nov. 19, at Furman, S.C. The individual title was won by OSU's Siri Alfheim, who dethroned defending champion Amy Mortimer with a time of 20:31.4. Mortimer was second in 20:40.0.
