EVANSTON, Ill. - NU's men's swimming and diving team looks to follow up last year's successful season with a strong start, as they begin the 2001-02 campaign this weekend.

Friday, the 'Cats travel to nearby Wisconsin-Milwaukee for a 6 p.m. dual meet. Then on Sunday they return to the Norris Aquatic Center to host the NU Relays, a co-ed event.

"The competition with Wisconsin-Milwaukee has always been spirited," head coach Bob Groseth said. "There are good races in every meet. This event will give our better swimmers a chance to test themselves in off-events, and our freshmen will find out what being a college swimmer is like."

In Sunday's relay action, which begins at noon, Northwestern returns the favor and hosts Wisconsin-Milwaukee and also Illinois-Chicago.

"The goals we have this year for our team predicate that we have to be strong in the relays," Groseth said. "This will be a testing ground for athletes who want to be on the relay teams at the end of the year for the Big Tens and the NCAAs."
