EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern wrestling team stepped out of conference action to host Northern Illinois Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena tying the Huskies 18-18. Northwestern jumped out to a 9-6 lead winning the 125, 141 and 149-pound weight classes. Northwestern forfeited the 133 pound weight class. At 149, Ryan Cumbee scored a two point takedown in the final 25 seconds to come away with the 3-1 victory. Cumbee improved to 15-7 on the year.
At 157 pounds, NU's Jason Erwinski dropped just his fourth match of the year, falling to Scott Owen 10-4, evening the team score at nine apiece. Ryan Kane put Northwestern back in the win column pinning Michael Pater in the first period (2:46) giving the Wildcats a 15-9 lead. Today's match was Kane's first since sustaining a concussion at the Midlands Championships on Dec. 29-30. He improved to 5-3 overall.
Northern Illinois won the next three weight classes, moving ahead 18-15. In the final match of the day, 16th-ranked Josh Saul defeated Northern's Jon Lovrich, 10-4. Saul improves to 6-3 on the year and 5-1 in dual matches.
