Northwestern Names Athletes of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University has named its Athletes of the Week for Jan. 22. The selections were made based on athletic competition from Jan. 15-21.

MALE -- Ryan Edlefsen, Tennis Playing No. 5 singles and paired with Josh Axler at No. 3 doubles, Ryan Edlefsen (Eden Prairie, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson) went undefeated over the weekend, as the Wildcats opened up their dual season with a pair of wins at home. Edlefsen defeated his NIU singles opponent 6-3, 6-2 and then teamed with Axler to quickly handle the doubles team, 8-2. Edlefsen stayed hot on Sunday, winning 6-3, 6-2 in singles, and outlasting Louisville in doubles with Axler, 9-7.

FEMALE -- Carly Wells, Fencing
Senior captain Carly Wells (Arlington Heights, Ill.) led all Wildcats with 20 wins at the Northwestern Duals Saturday and Sunday. Wells went 14-1 on Day 1 of the tournament, then had another strong showing on Sunday with a 6-2 mark. Wells and the rest of the sabre squad lost only one match the entire weekend.
