EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University baseball coach Paul Stevens has announced the signing of six players to national letters of intent. They will begin play with the Wildcats this spring.
"We believe this is an outstanding class," said Stevens, who enters his 14th season as the Wildcats' coach. "We expect a number of them to step right into our lineup, based on their skills, speed and work ethic. These are some young men who will be impact players at Northwestern and in the Big Ten."
Northwestern's freshman class features three players who were honorable mention All-America in USA Today, including David Gresky (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) who was named the Player of the Year in Ohio. Gresky was also a 22nd-round pick of the Florida Marlins in June's Major League Baseball draft.
Several Chicago-area players will stay close to home. Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and Jason Krynski (Niles, Ill./Niles West) were all-state players, while Josh Lieberman (Mundelein, Ill/Mundelein) was an all-area pick by several publications last spring at Mundelein. Another local, Steve Haake (Belleville, Ill./Gibault), transfers to Northwestern after spending two years at Southwestern Illinois College.
The group is rounded out by Dan Konecny (Ripon, Wis./Ripon), an all-state pitcher. Konecny, who stands 6-5, went 11-0 as a senior and boasted a 0.57 earned-run average.
Last year, Northwestern went 30-27 overall and finished sixth in the Big Ten. That qualified them for the conference's postseason tournament, where they were eliminated by losses to Minnesota and Ohio State.
