EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's and women's tennis teams both learned today that they have earned invitations to the NCAA Championships. The announcement was made Thursday afternoon.
The Northwestern women, ranked No. 17 nationally, earned the No. 1 seed at the regional that will be hosted by the University of Tulsa. NU takes on Mid-Continent Conference champion Oral Roberts (9-5) - the fourth seed in the Wildcats' regional - on Friday, May 12, at 2 p.m. on Tulsa's Harwell Tennis Courts. In the first match of the day, Tulsa will host Minnesota at 10 a.m. The winner of the four-team regional advances to the NCAA Sweet 16, which will take place at Pepperdine from May 18-26.
Northwestern enters the championship with a 22-4 overall record. Last weekend, the third-seeded Cats defeated fourth-seeded Minnesota, 4-3, in Ann Arbor, Mich., to win the Big Ten Championship for the second straight year.
The No. 56 Northwestern men's team, meanwhile, will take on the top-ranked team in the nation, Stanford, in the first round of the NCAA regional being hosted by the Cardinal. The Cats (11-11) are the fourth-seeded team and will play the top-seeded Cardinal (22-1) on Saturday, May 13, at noon Pacific Time at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. In the regional's other match, Auburn and California will meet at 9 a.m. The winner of the regional will advance to the NCAA Sweet 16, which will take place at the University of Georgia from May 22-30.
