Women's Golf Finishes Sixth at Big Ten Golf Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's golf team finished in a tie for sixth with the University of Michigan at this weekend's Big Ten Championships in Madison, Wis. The tournament took place at Wisconsin's University Ridge Golf Club, a par-72, 5,962 yard course. Northwestern shot rounds of 299-302-313-302=1216. Purdue University took home the team championship by setting a Big Ten Tournament record with rounds of 287-289-298-293=1167, beating the old record by 29 strokes.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was sophomore Emily Gilley (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) who finished the tournament in a tie for 12th after firing a final round 72. Freshman Elizabeth Burden (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) also finished in the top 20 with a 76 to put her in 19th. At the conclusion of the championships Gilley and Burden were named to the 2000 All-Big Ten women's golf team. Gilley was also named to the All-Big Ten team her freshman year.
Senior Colleen Kiely (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) finished in 24th shooting a final round 77. Just one stroke behind her was junior Kristen Beystehner (Alpharetta, Ga./Sacred Heart Academy (Ky.)) who also shot a final round 77 to put her in 26th. Following Beystehner in the Wildcat lineup was senior Karen England (Paris, Ontario, Canada/Paris District) who shot 77's in all four rounds of the tournament. Rounding out the Northwestern contingent was junior Christie Hermes (Dixon, Ill./Newman Central) who finished in 48th.
