Women's Tennis Seeded Third at Big Ten Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's tennis team is seeded third for the 19th annual Big Ten Women's Tennis Championships, which will take place April 27-30 at the Michigan Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Wildcats open tournament play on Friday, April 28 at 1 p.m. against the winner of Thursday's Indiana-Michigan State match.
Northwestern, the defending champion and the 16th-ranked team in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, enters the tournament at 18-4 overall and 8-2 in the Big Ten. NU has defeated both Michigan State and Indiana this season. MSU enters the tournament with an overall record of 2-13 (0-10 Big Ten), while Indiana is 13-10 (6-4 Big Ten) and ranked 43rd in the April 19 ITA Rankings.
Northwestern blanked the Spartans earlier this season and leads the all-time series, 24-1. The 'Cats defeated Indiana, 5-2 in March. The Hoosiers own the series advantage, defeating the Wildcats in 25 of the 36 meetings between the two schools.
At the 1999 Big Ten Championships, the Wildcats were the top seed and went on to win the title, defeating Wisconsin, 4-1, in the championship match.
