EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern head men's basketball coach Kevin O'Neill announced today the signing of Patrick Towne (forward, 6-7, 220, Plano, Texas/Plano East) to a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Northwestern beginning in the fall of 2000.
"Patrick will give us inside help next season," said O'Neill. "He's an excellent athlete who plays bigger than 6-7. With he and Casey Cortez, I feel we have added quality depth to our frontline to backup Aaron Jennings and Tavaras Hardy. I am very pleased with the players we have signed in the spring."
Towne is the second all-time leading rebounder in Plano East history and set a school record with 131 blocked shots in his senior season. He was named all-district and second team all-region. Towne blocked 12 shots in a game twice during his high school career and recorded 20 double-doubles and one triple double.
A McDonalds All-American nominee, Towne averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game as a senior. He shot 60 percent from the field while captaining Plano East to a 27-9 record and a berth in the regional semifinals.
Towne is a three-year member of the National Honor Society and is a McDonalds Academic All-American nominee. He chose NU over Georgia Tech, Kansas State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and SMU. Towne played high school basketball with current Wildcat Jason Burke.
Towne joins Cortez, Jitim Young, Ed McCants and Andrew Long in the Wildcat 2000 recruiting class. The spring signing period lasts until May 15.
