EVANSTON, Ill. - One day after scoring 12 runs on 10 hits against Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the Northwestern University baseball team was practically silenced by Wisconsin-Parkside pitcher Riley Gostisha Wednesday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park. Gostisha, a sophomore, allowed just four hits in eight innings of work as the Rangers shutout the Wildcats, 5-0.
Gostisha cruised through much of the afternoon, allowing two hits in the third and one apiece in the seventh and the eighth while stranding only five runners in that time. In the ninth, reliever David Devey loaded the bases but got out of it by inducing popouts from Travis Tharp (Boulder, Colo.) and Wesley Robinson (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephen's) and a groundout from Eric Roeder (Onsted, Mich./Onsted).
On the other side, freshman Christopher Spiering (Schaumburg, Ill./Conant) went five innings in taking the loss for Northwestern. Ben Dodd (Belleville, Ill./West) did a stellar job in relief, allowing just one hit in four innings on the hill.
Jeremy Kurella (Dunedin, Fla./Dunedin) and Pat Thompson (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) had two hits apiece to lead the Northwestern offense, while Roeder was the only other Wildcat to record a hit.
