Joe Hietpas Named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University junior catcher Joe Hietpas (Appleton, Wis./North) has been named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week after leading the Wildcats to an 8-1 road trip in Florida.
Hietpas played in five of Northwestern's six games last week, sitting out the final game against Central Connecticut. In his five outings, he hit .476 (10-of-21) with five runs and six RBI. The highlight of Hietpas' week came in the three-game Homestead (Fla.) Challenge, where he was named MVP after hitting .539 (7-of-13) with five runs and four RBI. In the championship game against Ohio State, he went 3-of-5 at the plate, knocked in the tying run in the ninth inning and then scored the gamewinner as Northwestern won, 7-6, to capture the championship.
After the home opener against Lewis University on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m., Northwestern opens the 2000 Big Ten campaign this weekend with Illinois at Rocky Miller Park in Evanston. The Wildcats and the Illini will sandwich single games on Friday (3 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.) around a doubleheader on Saturday (12 noon).
