EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern University baseball closed out one of its most successful trips ever Sunday morning with a 7-3 win over Central Connecticut in Homestead, Fla.
The win was the eighth in nine games for the Wildcats in the Sunshine State, and boosted their overall record to 13-6 after an 0-3 start to the 2000 campaign. That marks the second-best start to a season in the 13-year tenure of head coach Paul Stevens -- only the 1995 team, which reeled off 12 straight wins after a 1-2 start, got off to a faster start.
Offensively, Northwestern reached double figures in the hit category for the seventh time in Florida with 12. Freshman Brandon Ackley led the hit parade with three, while Matt Thompson and Travis Tharp had two apiece. J.P. Williamson added clout to the lineup with a home run.
Christopher Spiering started and got the win on the mound. The freshman went six innings and allowed all three Blue Devil runs, before Jacob Briskman came and shut the door on CCSU with three hitless innings.
Northwestern will have its home opener Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. against Lewis University, and then the Wildcats entertain Illinois at Rocky Miller Park next weekend to kick off the Big Ten season.
