Northwestern To Induct Five into Hall of Fame

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern will induct the 1999-2000 class into its Athletic Hall of Fame tonight (February 11). The induction ceremony and dinner will take place at 6 p.m. at the Allen Center on Northwestern's Evanston campus. The five inductees will also be honored at halftime of the men's basketball game on Saturday, February 12.
This year's class:
SEYMOUR GREENBERG -- Tennis, 1939-42
In 1940, became Northwestern's first Big Ten singles champion ... Won singles crown again in 1941 ... Won doubles title in 1940 ... Led Wildcats to Big Ten team championships in 1940 and 1942.
MANUEL DE LA TORRE -- Golf, 1942, 1946-47
As a sophomore in 1942, finished second at the NCAA Championships ... Led Northwestern to a second-place finish in the NCAA team competition ... Upon returning from the Army three years later, captained the Wildcats in 1946 and 1947 ... In 1986, was awarded the first national PGA Teacher of the Year award.
JUDY LEVERING -- Honorary
A 1960 Northwestern graduate ... Became the first female president of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) on January 1, 1999 ... Initially elected to USTA's board of directors in 1994 ... Active member of NU's Women's Athletic Association in late 1950s ... Recipient of lifetime N-Club membership.
DON STONESIFER -- Football, 1948-50
Unanimous All-America and All-Big Ten selection in 1950 ... Established Big Ten records with 28 catches for 394 yards and set Northwestern's single-game mark with 13 receptions ... Played in 1951 College All-Star Game, the East-West Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl.
PATTY WALSH -- Volleyball, 1979-83
Only volleyball player in Northwestern history to be named All-America three times ... Member of Big Ten's All-Decade Team of the 1980s ... Played on the 1978 and 1981 U.S. Olympic Festival squads.
