* The 38th annual Midlands tournament has 334 competitors.
* Four of last year's 10 Midlands champions returned again this year, including Joe Williams who is gunning for his seventh consecutive Midlands crown. If he succeeds, Williams will join Bruce Baumgartner as the only Midlands contestants with seven or more titles. Baumgartner has eight Midlands titles.
* Second-seed Florean Ghinea (Montclair State) recorded the fastest fall in Midlands history at the 141 pound weight class when he pinned Jeff Jezuit (Chicago) in 17 seconds.
* Lehigh's Dave Esposito 42 second pin of Josh Beals (Indiana) put him fifth on the 149 pound fastest fall list.
* Lionel Halsey (Schultz WC) pinned Jason Lebron (Triton) at 184 pounds in 14 seconds, putting him in a tie for second on the 184 pound fastest falls list.
* Keen WC's Kevin Vogel pinned Jon Foster (West Virginia) in 34 seconds placing ninth on the 184 pound fastest fall list.
* 197-pounder, Lee Fullhart (Hawkeye WC) pinned Joe Ravenna (Triton) in 40 seconds placing him fifth on the 197 pound fastest falls list.
* Also at 197, Chael Sonnen (Oregon) beat his own fastest fall record by one second (17 seconds) pinning Ricardo Romero (Rutgers).
* Lee Fullhart (Hawkeye WC) had a quick morning as he needed just 2:05 to pin both his opponents advancing to the quarterfinals in the 197 championship bracket.
