EVANSTON, Ill. - Emily Butler (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) scored a game-high 25 points to help the Northwestern Wildcats defeat the Chicago Challengers, 70-66, in their final warm up before the season officially opens next Monday.
The Wildcats got off to a sluggish start before taking their first lead eight minutes into the first half. A Butler three-pointer put the 'Cats ahead by one (13-12). The lead would continue to change hands 10 times in the first half, but the Challengers finally won the first half battle and took a two-point advantage into the locker room (40-38).
Chicago came out of the half and used a 10-4 run to build its largest lead of the game at 50-42. Chicago pulled down 20 offensive rebounds to score 17 second-chance points. However, NU chipped away at the lead, and finally took control on a pair of Butler free throws with 41 seconds left. The Wildcats kept the lead this time, putting the game away by making seven free throws down the stretch.
The `Cats shot 44 percent from the floor and landed three players in double figures -- Butler, Leslie Dolland (Bloomington, Minn./Blake School) (14) and Bill?e Russell (Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Dundee Crown) (12).
The Challengers were led by Kina Brown with 25 points and 13 rebounds. This was only the third defeat for Chicago in its preseason college tour.
The Wildcats will tip off the 2000-01 season next Monday at Northern Illinois. Game time in DeKalb is scheduled for 7 p.m.
