Women's Tennis Competes at June Stewart Invitational

10/29-- EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's tennis team competed in the 2000 June Stewart Invitational, held this past weekend on the campus of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.
Marine Piriou (St. Pol de Leon, France/Notre Dame) and Shannon Duffy (Plano, Texas/Plano) won the Flight Three Doubles championship, defeating Kentucky's Bradwell and Stafford, 8-4. Piriou also won her singles flight, while three other Wildcats advanced to the finals of their respective flights.
Piriou did not play a true championships match, but instead played Lauren Rose of Vanderbilt. She was scheduled to play teammate Duffy, while Rose was supposed to play Aleke Tsoubanos. Piriou defeated Rose in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) while Duffy fell to Tsoubanos in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 6-4).
Lia Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) was defeated in the championship match of Flight One because of injury default. Freshman Jessica Rush (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) fell to Vandy's Kelly Schmandt (7-5, 6-2) in the championship match of Flight 5. Stacy Kokx (West Bloomfield, Mich./Marian) lost to Vandy's Kori Scott (6-1, 7-5).
The Wildcats conclude the fall portion of their schedule this weekend at the ITA Regional Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. The tournament will begin Thursday and continue through next Tuesday.
